The SCENAR is a biofeedback technology that is both diagnostic and therapeutic. It is a small a hand held device that was originally developed in Russia as part of their space programme. The intention was to help keep astronauts healthy during long periods in space. It has been used in Russian medicine for over twenty-five years and available in the West for almost 10 years.
What does it feel like?
As the device is moved over the surface of the skin a comfortable tingling sensation is felt. In cases of severe pain or acute conditions the sensations may be stronger.
How does it work?
The SCENAR is placed on the skin and emits electrical impulses which stimulate the body to self repair. The impulses have been designed to mimic the electrical signals of the nervous system, and the brain is stimulated to release neuropeptides to carry out the process of healing and repair. It is regarded as a biofeedback technology as the SCENAR triggers a dialogue between the brain and part of the body being treated. Usually the first result is a reduction in pain, and further treatments can trigger a resolution of the problem.
Unlike other electrical stimulation devices in use, there is no diminishing or habituation of response. As no two consecutive impulses are the same, this discourages adaptation, where the brain becomes used to the stimulus and ceases to respond.
